Design Gallery
Since I started Woolly Originals in June 2015, I have created more than thirty designs. And every one has its own story, pattern and colour theme. For some I have used Jamieson's of Shetland yarns; for others I have collaborated with some amazing indie dyers. A huge Thank You to them for allowing me to use their beautiful yarns.
Here is a selection of my designs:
Apple Sherbet - Based on old fashioned apple sherbet sweets
Argyll - My interpretation of the Argyle diamond pattern based on the music, the movies and my family holidays in Argyll in the 1970s!
Bandit Brioche - Pattern based on hand knitter’s brioche or tuck stitch
Callanish Standing Stones - A tessellating pattern based on the Callanish Standing Stones in the Isle of Lewis
Channel 4 - A one-off design to protest against the proposed sale of Channel 4 by the Tory government
Dragon Boat Festival - Based on the poisonous animal shapes on the longboats, protecting them from the evil river spirits during the races. A collaboration with Mrs Lam Yarns
FCB Cadell Inspired - Inspired by the Iona landscape paintings of the artist, FCB Cadell (1883-1937). A collaboration with Iona Wool
First Aid Kit - A mini tessellating pattern based on the Callanish Standing for you to use as your First Aid kit
Five Sisters - Based on the pyramidal oil shale mounds called "bings" in West Lothian
Gin Bottles - Pattern based on a variety of shapes of Scottish gin bottles
GTS 10th Anniversary - A unique design to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ginger Twist Studio, Edinburgh. A collaboration with Jess of GTS
Heritage Orchard - Based on the organic pear, plum and apple orchard planted by East Coast Organics in East Lothian, Scotland
Highland Grove - Pattern based on five native Scottish trees: Scots pine; oak; aspen; birch; and dwarf willow
Inverewe Floristry - Based on the shapes of the plants in the herbaceous borders of the Walled Garden at NTS Inverewe, Wester Ross, NW Scotland
Joan Eardley Inspired - Inspired by the Scottish landscape paintings of the artist, Joan Eardley (1921-1963)
Knapdale Lichens - Inspired by the range of lichens found in the ancient oak forests on the Knapdale peninsula, Argyll. A collaboration with Ripples Crafts Yarn
Lava Landscape - Pattern based on the alpine plants and volcanic landscape of the Þórsmörk Valley, Iceland
MERCURY 13 - Inspired by the privately sponsored programme to assess and train women pilots to become astronauts in the 1960s
Mocktails & Cocktails - Pattern based on a variety of shapes of drinks’ glasses
Nordic Star - Based on the traditional Scandinavian and Shetland Star patterns
Phenology - This design has been created in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) to highlight the work of their volunteers who collect data on the botanical specimens within the Garden and how this data is used to determine climate change
PROTEST - Inspired by the women of Greenham Common and how they used the fence surrounding the military base where they were protesting to tell their stories
Root Veg - A tessellating pattern based on orange carrots & cream parsnips
Saltire Star - Based on the traditional Shetland Star and Saltire patterns
Save the Oblong Fern - Pattern based on the effects of the human population and climate change on the Scottish plant, the oblong fern (Woodsia ilvensis). Design created in partnership with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE)
Save the Sowthistle - Pattern based on the effects of climate change on the Scottish alpine plant, the alpine blue-sowthistle (Cicerbita alpina ).
Save the Willow - Pattern based on the effects of climate change on the Scottish alpine plant, the woolly willow (Salix lanata).
Scots Pine - Pattern based on the native Scottish tree, Pinus sylvestris known as the Scots Pine
Scott Monument - Pattern based on the iconic Edinburgh memorial to Sir Walter Scott. A collaboration with Ginger Twist Studio
Scottish Wildflowers - Pattern based on the spear thistle and ribwort plantain
Summerhall - Inspired by the original use of the Summerhall buildings in Edinburgh, I created a design to highlight some of the animals that have been and continue to be treated by the Royal Dick Vet School plus that well known resident animal of Edinburgh, the grey squirrel!
Swimming Lanes - Design in collaboration with Ripples Crafts Yarn, celebrating the RNLI’s commitment to tackling the global problem of drowning
Taigh-dubh - Design inspired by the stone walls of the blackhouses of Harris and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. A collaboration with Uist Wool and Maiden Aunt Yarns
Tangled Galashiels - A "yoked jumper" design, to celebrate the Tangled Galashiels Fibre Festival. ZippaClips created by Suraya of Mahliqa Jewellery
