Bearford Originals is a collaboration between Fu of the Bearford flock based in East Lothian and Sarah of Woolly Originals, a textile designer in Edinburgh.
The yarn for Bearford Originals comes from the East Coast Organics farm, a Biodynamic Association organic certified food producer in the East Lothian countryside near Haddington. The farm also raises forty-seven sheep and seven alpacas at the foot of the Lammermuir hills. This Bearford flock includes Jacob sheep, Shropshires, Wensleydales, Wensleydale x Shropshires and Wensleydale x Jacobs.
The wool fleeces and alpaca fibre are GOTS certified organically woollen spun at the Natural Fibre Company. Our 4-ply yarns sold in 25g cakes are either undyed or colourfully plant-dyed on the farm by ourselves using materials either locally grown or foraged, or purchased from ethical suppliers. By selling a smaller sized yarn cake, we are able to offer our beautiful organic yarn to a wider range of knitters, crocheters, embroiderers and crafters.
Our yarns, with names inspired by nearby East Lothian villages, are available in three 4-ply bases, both dyed and undyed:
- Whittingehame White – a pale cream yarn of 50% cream Jacob wool and 50% cream Wensleydale x Shropshire wool;
- Garvald Grey – a flecked grey yarn of 50% mixed Jacob wool and 50% Wensleydale x Shropshire wool; and
- Morham Mix – a flecked greyish brown yarn of 50% mixed Jacob wool, 25% Wensleydale x Shropshire wool, and 25% alpaca fibre.
We will be selling our yarns at UK yarn festivals and events. We have decided not to sell online as we would like to show you the colours in person, and chat with you about the processes of producing the yarn. For a list of shows we're attending, check out my EVENTS page, follow us on Instagram at @bearfordoriginals, or sign up for the Woolly Originals newsletter!
